NSClient++ Help (#1) - Failed to install on Windows 2008 32bit (#439) - Message List
Trying to install NSClient++-0.3.6-Win32 via the MSI onto a Windows 2008 32bit server. The installer fails with the error:
Product: NSClient++ (Win32) -- 1: Failed to install service: OpenSCManager failed: 5: Access is denied.
I'm not sure what the issue is as I'm not really much of a Windows person. I am a local administrator on the box so I believe I should have all the permissions I need. Can someone offer me some advice? The OS prompted me about not trusting the application and asked if I wanted to continue. Not sure if that means anything or not.

I have the same issue, only with the 64 bit vfersion of 3.6. I tried reinstalling as administrator, and it seemed to succeed, but the log shows "Failed to get service information: OpenSCManager failed: 5: Access is denied".
I can't uninstall either, it complains about no access to OpenSCManager.
Any ideas?

OK - I grabbed the latest nightly build (3.7), reinstalled as administrator, and all is well.

Ugh... this is ridiculous. Now I have a version installed, that is in some stuck form and the nightly snapshot (NSClient++-0.3.7-Win32-20090719-1520.msi) can't uninstall the previous version. It throws the error:
"1: Failed to uninstall service: OpenSCManager failed: 5: Access is denied."
And if I try to manually uninstall it from the "Programs and features" thing in Control Panel, I get the exact same error. There is no doubt that I am an administrator on this server. So why can't I remove this??? I can't even find the service listed in the Services applet or see the process in Task Manager.

ok... this thread keeps getting longer and longer :)
I have done some investigations and the latest release work on w2k8. The "problem" though is that it wont stop/start services properly unless you run it as administrator.
All in all, this is a "minor" issue as windows 2008 handles this for you by popuping up a "kill dialog" not as nice I would have liked but it works...
Let me know is anyone has any other issues with the installer an/or windows 2008.

I am also having this issue on a Win2k8 machine. Tried installing the 3.6 version install failed. Now I cant uninstall, nor can I install 3.7 over the top of it. Keep receiving the error:
"1: Failed to uninstall service: OpenSCManager failed: 5: Access is denied."

Try running the installer as administrator.
Since this a problem with an "old" installer it is as far as I know impossible to fix (afterwards).
Hopefully the new (0.3.7) should not have that problem.

Humm...
I am not really sure I can fix this since it is a problem with the OLD MSI file.
I am not an MSI installer expert.
If someone has the time feel free to try the msizap tool and see if that works: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370523%28VS.85%29.aspx
When I get home (weekend) I shall try to see if I can simulate this on my w2k8 VM but at the moment I don't have access to it.

NSClient++ 0.3.7 64-bit fails to install on Windows 2008 R2, also...
A box pops up and vanishes when I run nsclient++ /install
0.3.6 64-bit installs fine.

Uhmm?
nsclient++ /install
Is not what this thread is about (I hope).
But I shall investigate this as well then. I assume your running nsclient++ as administrator?
HUmm, come to think of it... what happened with the "impersonation" I had before for admin. Havent checked that since I swapped building env. so maybe I have lost that?

Hello, I can confirm this behaviour. It happens when you try to install NSClient++ on W2K8 32bit with a user which is not "local\Administrator". Even if your user has local admin rights, you will get this error. Installation worked fine logged in as "Administrator".

Hi All,
Just tested on Windows server 2008 r2 installing NSClient++ 0.3.8 x64 and installed beautifully. Have latest NSClient++ client downloaded.
Steps were :-
- Start --> (right-Click) Command Prompt icon.
- Select "Rus as administrator"
- Type "msiexec /i "NSClient++-0.38-x64.msi"
Will install and prompt at end to start service.
To uninstall do steps 1 and 2 above then run type :-
"msiexec /x "NSClient++-0.38-x64.msi"
All good :)
